Reinstate all of the lime rendering on all of the various walls throughout the property.

This job in Hawkchurch required a complete renovation project carried out by Mew Developments. As part of this project we were approached to completely reinstate all of the lime rendering on various walls throughout the property. All of the walls in the property were of a stone construction and so the job involved pointing in the stonework with lime mortar, then applying a scratch coat (and in some places two scratch coats), followed by a mid coat (also known as a float coat) and then lastly a top coat.

Some of the walls were slightly below ground level and had signs of damp. Here it wasn’t a case of simply rendering as we normally would. Instead, we had to be very considerate of the type of lime used and the timings between coats in different areas due to drying speeds. Using a render will most certainly help when used in damp conditions on older properties.

As a grade II listed building we had to reinstate the walls as they would have been originally. Two ceilings were severely damaged before the renovation and we reinstated the ceilings using new laths and a lime putty render system over the top using horse hair and different variations of sand.
